Placing AI at the Center of Learning
Artificial intelligence has become a central force in the workplace, but is still sometimes lacking in our classrooms. Our students entering the workforce today will encounter AI in every discipline an industry. Unfortunately many of our academic programs still treat AI as an optional topic (or even taboo contraband) rather than an essential skill. This session will explore a course designed specifically to place AI at the center of learning and prepare students for the work they will do with AI after they graduate. It will demonstrate how graduate students can use AI meaningfully within their fields while preparing for careers that demand AI fluency and ethical awareness.
The course featured in this session was designed to help students not only understand AI but also use it to extend their professional capabilities. Instead of separating AI instruction from disciplinary content, the course embeds it into every part of the learning process. Students interact with AI throughout the course by completing projects and assessments that require them to analyze, create, and problem-solve in ways that mirror the real-world demands of their professions.
Designing Learning around Interaction and Application
The course was developed in a graduate program that serves students from a variety of disciplines. This diversity allows students autonomy and encourages them to bring their unique lens to our exploration of AI. The structure of the course allowed learners to connect AI practices to their specific fields while working toward shared goals of proficiency and ethical awareness.
The course begins with a foundation of understanding. Students explore what AI is, how it works, and how it is reshaping their industries. They discuss examples from their fields and reflect on how AI can enhance human creativity and problem-solving. Rather than teaching AI as a technical subject, the course presents it as a collaborative tool that can support things like decision-making and innovation.
As the course progresses, students move from exploration to application. They interact directly with AI tools to complete authentic assessments that simulate professional scenarios - all while documenting and reflecting on their interactions with various AI platforms. Some of the tasks include designing solutions or creating visual materials. Students learn not only about principles of prompt engineering, but they also work to refine their prompts and reflect on others' prompts as they discuss the quality of AI outputs and identify both opportunities and limitations of AI. Each activity requires them to think about when and how to use AI responsibly - and even which platform is most useful or appropriate for which task. The assessments are structured to encourage continuous engagement and reflection so that they build practical skills that transfer directly to the workplace.
Developing Ethical Awareness through Practice
A key element of the course is the integration of ethics through experience. Rather than treating ethics as a separate discussion, the course makes it part of every task. Students confront ethical decisions while using AI, such as how to handle intellectual property, how to give credit, and how to maintain transparency - both in the classroom and in the workplace. Student interact with AI constantly and experience both the potential and pitfalls of various platforms. They see firsthand how reliance without understanding can lead to error and how thoughtful (and mindful) engagement can lead to innovation. These experiences help them develop a sense of judgment and responsibility that extends beyond the classroom.
Each reflection activity asks students to examine their evolving relationship with AI. They describe how their thinking changes over time and how they plan to use AI in their professional lives. These reflections become a record of growth and a bridge between academic learning and workplace readiness.
Creating a Human-Centered Learning Environment
Although the course focuses fairly exclusively on AI on the context of the program material, it remains deeply human. The goal is not to produce experts in algorithms but to prepare thoughtful professionals who can work alongside "intelligent" systems with confidence. Learning activities emphasize communication and collaboration, as well as critical reflection. Students share their findings and insights in discussion spaces and group work as they learning from each other’s experiments and discoveries.
The professor role is that of a facilitator who guides inquiry and models curiosity. This approach creates a learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and exploring unfamiliar tools. They learn that proficiency with AI is less about mastering a single platform and more about developing habits of experimentation and reflection. We teach them to be subject matter experts in a world now inundated with pseudo cyber-experts.
Supporting Workforce Readiness
Employers across industries seek graduates who can navigate AI technologies with understanding and creativity. This course was built to meet that need. Students finish the program ready to use AI to enhance their professional work from the first day of employment. They know how to identify appropriate tools, evaluate results, and maintain ethical standards.
The session will show how course design choices align academic learning with professional outcomes and important principles of UDL and accessibility. Participants will learn how the course links assessments to real-world competencies such as communication, analysis, and problem-solving. They will see how students gain confidence through repeated practice and feedback as they apply AI thoughtfully in complex situations. The underlying intention of the course is to bridge the gap between education and employment. They graduate not only with knowledge about AI but also with hands-on experience using it to produce meaningful work, and a portfolio that showcases all of these things.

The presenter will walk through examples from the Canvas environment, showing how students interact with AI in activities and assessments. Participants will discuss how similar approaches can be adapted for their own programs and disciplines.
The session encourages active participation. Attendees will consider questions such as how to balance human guidance with AI assistance and how to help students build trust in their own judgment. Short reflective prompts will invite consideration of how educators can use AI to promote student success rather than dependency.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with an example of how to integrate AI across the curriculum and how to design experiences that make AI use a natural part of learning. They will also receive practical takeaways such as design strategies, reflection prompts, and assessment ideas that encourage ethical and confident engagement with AI.

We need to active look for ways to help them build the skills and judgment needed to lead in a world where technology and humanity can be meaningfully connected. This session offers a practical path forward for that work, showing how sustained exposure and engagement can prepare students not just to use AI but to shape their learning and their professional future with it.
