Short Abstract
Learn how to transform rubrics from ambiguous criteria to meaningful, discrete learning measurements. These single-point rubrics are easily incorporated into an LMS and encourage students to reflect and improve learning. Initial findings from a research project that collected student reflections after participating in courses with transformed rubrics will be shared.
Extended Abstract
Participants will view before and after examples of rubrics that were transformed from ambiguous criteria to meaningful, discrete learning measurements. These single-point rubrics allow students to easily view success criteria to complete discussion board and dropbox assignments. After students complete assignments, the instructor marks the transformed rubric providing more detailed feedback on areas to improve. By providing students with opportunities to resubmit their work to meet the intended success criteria, these experiences focus on student learning growth rather than "grading." The speaker uses these transformed, single-point rubrics in Master of Education courses for teachers of PreK-16 students to model effective teaching and learning strategies. Initial findings from a research project that collected student perceptions after participating in courses with transformed rubrics will be shared. Participants will leave the session with ideas for how to measure student learning and promote student learning growth in their courses.
