Short Abstract
The OLC Course Review Scorecard is more than just a rubric, it is a flexible and scalable tool that institutions, faculty, and instructional designers can use to assess, refine, and elevate online and blended courses. Like a Swiss Army knife, the Scorecard can be adapted to different needs, whether as a self-assessment tool, a peer review framework, a student feedback instrument, or for a formal course evaluation process. It can also be utilized across different design stages and by users with varying experience levels.

To bring these applications to life, this session will be interactive and discussion-driven, allowing participants to engage in real-time exploration of the Scorecard’s uses.
-Warm-Up Prompts – To kick off the session, participants will be asked to respond in the Zoom chat to a series of prompts to help frame the discussion around participants’ unique needs and challenges.
-Scorecard Walkthrough & Use Cases Overview – The facilitator will provide a brief guided tour of the OLC Course Review Scorecard, including an overview of its structure and purpose, a breakdown to illustrate how it evaluates course design, and examples of how it can be used in different contexts.
-Breakout Activity – “The Right Tool for the Job” – Small groups will be assigned a specific use case (e.g., self-assessment, peer review, student feedback, formal evaluation) and will collaboratively discuss how the Scorecard could be applied in that scenario. Groups will then share key insights with the audience at large, highlighting the versatility of the Scorecard across various settings.
-Live “Choose Your Own Adventure” Walkthrough – The facilitator will present a realistic institutional challenge, and participants will vote on how they would apply the Scorecard to address it. This guided decision-making exercise will demonstrate how adaptable the Scorecard is to different institutional priorities.

Phil Denman
Coordinator, Quality Scorecard Suite at Online Learning Consortium, Inc.
Phil Denman serves as Coordinator of the Quality Scorecard Suite for the Online Learning Consortium where he leads quality assurance programs related to online, blended, and digital learning. He brings over 25 years of experience to OLC, including 15 years spent as an instructional designer, initially helping launch UC Berkeley's first two fully-online Master's degree programs, then spending 10 years at San Diego State University. During this time, he held concurrent roles with the California State University Chancellor's Office, serving as Campus Coordinator for the Course Redesign with Technology initiative leading faculty to implement high impact practices to improve student success, as well the Faculty Lead for Quality Assurance where he developed programs to evaluate and improve online and blended learning. Outside of higher education, Phil has also held roles in product development, marketing, and broadcasting. He holds a M.S. in Education from California State University, East Bay and a B.A. in Communication Arts from Allegheny College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania.
