This workshop examines the transition from the traditional education models to Open Educational Resources (OER), which represents a critical shift in redefining educational access. By analyzing HBCUs that have implemented OER, this session explores the integration of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) concept, which allows learners to leverage their personal brands and identities in an educational context.
The educational landscape is profoundly transforming as we shift from traditional models to Open Educational Resources (OER). This proposal, titled "From Traditional to Open: Redefining Educational Access," explores the potential of OER to democratize learning and enhance accessibility for diverse populations. Central to this discussion is integrating the NIL concept, which allows individuals—particularly students and educators—to utilize their brands in educational settings.
The NIL framework empowers learners to take ownership of their educational journeys by enabling them to share their knowledge, skills, and experiences in a way that resonates with their identities. This approach not only enriches the learning experience but also encourages students to engage in the creation and dissemination of educational content actively. By leveraging their unique perspectives, learners can contribute to a more vibrant and diverse repository of OER that reflects many voices and experiences.
This proposal highlights the importance of developing collaboration among educational institutions and communities to create a sustainable ecosystem for OER. By embracing the NIL concept, we can facilitate partnerships that support the development of high-quality, open-access materials that are relevant and engaging. This collaborative model enhances educational resources and provides pathways for students to monetize their contributions, thereby addressing financial barriers to education.
The overview of the presentation and discussion will target strategies aimed at breaking down existing barriers, ensuring that quality education is available to all individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status, geographic location, or background. By redefining educational access through OER and the NIL framework, we can cultivate an inclusive learning environment that promotes equity, innovation, and lifelong learning. This initiative not only seeks to transform how education is delivered but also to empower individuals to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Participants attending the workshop will:
1. Create a mission, vision, and branding support statement and create or update a LinkedIn profile.
2. Learn and implement the NIL concepts to use for teaching and learning
3. Share their strategies and concepts with other campus leaders
