Hear from a team of online learning professionals at a midsize community college as we share our evolving instructional design workflows for online course development, quality review standards, data-driven course revision, and project management. Learn about our collaboration with faculty and librarians to develop high-quality online courses.
The lead presenter serves as a Chief Online Learning Officer at a midsize community college. Moving into the role three years ago, they were challenged with reimagining workflows, processes, and responsibilities across a growing instructional design team. Collectively, the team has reshaped the way our online courses are designed and the quality standards to which they are held accountable. We’ve also built a custom project management solution tailored to our specific needs, enabling a more streamlined and effective course development process in partnership with faculty and librarians. If only we had found a session like this when we started planning! There is no one-size-fits-all approach to online course production, and what works for us won’t necessarily be a good fit at another institution. However, we’ll share a number of successful projects and initiatives that can be replicated or expanded upon. We’ll also provide an opportunity for our audience to share what they’re doing in the culture and context of their own institutions. Specifically, you can expect us to talk about: 1) How the Center for Online Learning is positioned within our organization, and how we strategize with academic units for course and program growth. 2) How our instructional design team partners with faculty developers and librarians to create online course master shells that are copied into course sections each semester. 3) Our reimagined course development workflow with phases for planning, development, and quality review, noting deliverables for IDs and faculty throughout a 24-week process. 4) Our newly launched project management solution, built to meet our specific needs. 5) Our efforts in creating a multimedia services unit within the Center for Online Learning. 6) Our custom quality review standards based on OSCQR and our peer-review process for holding courses accountable to those standards. 7) Our data-driven approach to revising online courses and dashboard for tracking improvement in online student success. This session promises to be a valuable learning experience, offering actionable insights into the collaborative processes of creating high-quality online courses. We will discuss the importance of teamwork and share strategies for successful collaboration with various stakeholders. Audience engagement: The session will be structured to facilitate the exchange of best practices in online education and instructional design workflows. Participants will be invited to anonymously engage throughout the presentation using mobile devices. Expect opportunities to share and learn from others through Nearpod collaborate boards.
