In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is more than just a set of tools—it’s becoming a pivotal part of the student experience. Join us as we delve into the latest insights from part one of a collaborative research project between the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) and D2L, which highlights how AI is actively shaping student engagement across affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions. These insights have significant implications for the future of research on quality online learning. Our research uncovers the real stories behind the data: how students are integrating AI into their daily learning routines, the perceptions they hold about its role in their education, and the tangible effects on their motivation, participation, and cognitive engagement. We’ll explore how AI is enhancing, or in some cases complicating, their educational experiences and provide researchers with actionable strategies to support students in this AI-driven environment, ensuring that technology enhances, rather than hinders, meaningful learning. This presentation will empower researchers with the knowledge and tools to stay ahead of the curve, enabling them to drive innovation and improve educational outcomes in an increasingly AI-integrated academic landscape.
