This session presents findings from a 2024 national study of over 500 online learning leaders in US higher education. It builds on prior research, including the CHLOE reports, and introduces the UPCEA COLO Competencies, highlighting leaders' self-assessed skills and the significance of these competencies in guiding institutional initiatives.
Online learning in US higher education is no passing fad. During the pandemic, online courses were the only option for institutions to provide academic offerings. After the pandemic, most US HE students are taking some or all of their courses online. This national study builds on research from COLOs (Chief Online Learning Officers) from 2017 and 2018, as well as the CHLOE reports. During Summer 2024, this national study captured information from more than 500 online learning leaders about their background and experiences as they guide efforts and initiatives for this vital endeavor at their institutions. Organizational details are included for context and comparison. A special addition to the earlier studies is the introduction of the UPCEA COLO Competencies, collecting data about the importance to their college or university, and a self-assessment of their skills. This session will share the results and key findings.
