Workshops foster innovation by facilitating collaboration and problem-solving, vital for tertiary students. USP's self-paced online workshops, initiated due to COVID-19, aim to provide flexible learning opportunities. Well-received by students, they address challenges and reduce staff workload. However, regional campuses lack sufficient support, indicating a need for expansion.
A workshop can be a powerful tool for innovation, as it allows individuals or teams to collaborate and brainstorm new ideas, and to develop and test prototypes or solutions. Workshops can be used to identify problems, develop new services and support, or improve existing ones. They can also be used to explore new technologies or support services. Additionally, workshops can be used to build a sense of community and shared purpose among participants, which can be essential for driving innovation. Workshops are beneficial for tertiary students as they provide hands-on learning opportunities and the ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. They also offer the chance for students to network with industry professionals and gain practical skills that will be valuable in their future careers. Additionally, workshops can help students develop important soft skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication. Tertiary workshops are training or educational programs that are offered at the post-secondary level, typically at a college or university. They can be focused on a specific skill or trade, and may be designed to prepare students for a specific career or profession. Tertiary workshops can also be used to provide continuing education or professional development opportunities for individuals already working in a particular field. The Student Learning Services (SLS), Centre for Flexible Learning (CFL) at the University of the South Pacific (USP) designed and implemented twenty self-paced generic skill workshops at the beginning of 2022. Student Learning Support has been providing face-to-face workshops at the USP campuses since its inception. With COVID-19 remote learning and teaching SLS realized the need for more online resources and given intermittent connectivity and accessibility to resources, there was a need for online, self-paced resources. In an attempt to meet the student needs, and lockdown situation and remote teaching, SLS developed self-paced online workshops to ensure that support was available for students at all campuses at any given time to help students upskill. They aim to provide participants with hands-on experience and knowledge they can apply in their studies, work or personal life. It has been noted that self-paced online workshops piloted in Semester 1 2022 was very well received by students. A total of 1600 students completed the workshops. There were some challenges identified which the team will fine-tune for implementation in Semester 2. Similarly, the workshops have gained more popularity amongst the students and course coordinators in Semester 2, 2022. This is evident in the data portraying 2347 student attempts. The proposition of online self-paced generic SLS workshops not only showed significant reduction of staff workload and burnout but also gave the stakeholders the opportunity to see the difference Student Learning Specialists make in different regional campuses. USP is a regional university co-owned by twelve South Pacific countries, unfortunately we do not have SLS at all campuses. It was noted that campuses without SLS had very low participants. This calls for more student support targeting this regional campuses. The following structure was planned and implemented for all the workshop. Structure 1. Pre-skilled test Five questions that test prior knowledge of participants for the given workshop topic. (One attempt) 2. During workshop Some resources that could be used to deliver the content: - Voice over presentations - Google slides - Videos (You Tube, zoom or prepare content and we can create animated videos) - Use your discretion in considering what resources or examples to use for contents and activities. The contents will be vetted later. ‘The end goal is to have a highly interactive, yet self-servicing, design’. 3. Post-skilled test - Ten questions based on the workshop content. (Two attempts)
