Navigating a new remote or hybrid job? Or leading a team in the ‘here, there, anywhere’ employment landscape of today? Following the coronavirus pandemic, many academic organizations reworked their operational models. Much like hybrid online courses, instructional support services CAN be effectively delivered through a blend of in-person & online elements.
Session Takeaways - Describe characteristics of effective teamwork. - Describe a hybrid team model providing flexible instructional support. - Summarize strategies that support successful hybrid teaming. Session Description In recent years, many industries have been forced to rethink the who, where, when, and how of business operations. This is no less true for academic institutions, which have been considerably challenged by chaotic fluctuations in student enrollments, evolving instructional delivery methods, and innovative new technologies. Accommodating such transformations within a brief timespan has consequently led to employee burnout, turnover, and an increased demand for remote work options. At this session, an instructional design and technology team from a large state university will engage participants in considering a flexible model for providing seamless support to instructors, program leaders, and related stakeholders. Much like a hybrid/blended course delivery model, instructional support services may be efficiently realized with some elements available in person, and others online (synchronously and/or asynchronously). This instructional support team has been practicing a hybrid team approach for several years. They provide a range of structured/scheduled and on-demand services to faculty. These services are offered in person, in the classroom, and/or online through leveraging platforms such as Zoom, Slack, Calendly, and Google Drive. This approach has required a strategic implementation process, to ensure that internal quality standards are met and that staff are adequately supported regardless of location. Practical workflow management and collaborative communication are also essential to team success; several strategies and tools will be discussed at this session. Effective teamwork and taskwork does not happen in a vacuum. It requires thoughtful leadership, diligence, and occasional course corrections. Standardized frameworks and competencies of quality teamwork can be useful in guiding the development of goals and norms for such hybrid teams. With a dash of human creativity and adaptive thinking, it is truly possible to offer quality instructional support services here, there and anywhere. Session Interactions During this session, participants will be invited to discuss a variety of strategies and tools that are adaptable for hybrid instructional support teams. The presenter will share a resource handout with planning templates, tips, and recommended readings.
