This workshop will examine educational technologies that let teachers embed questions into videos to check student understanding while engaging them visually and auditorily. According to Fisher, Frey, and Hattie (2021), interactive videos have the largest positive effect in learning of other measured technologies. Students love watching videos - let's use that!
Please bring your laptops to participate in this interactive session.
Objective: Teachers will create an interactive and engaging EdPuzzle video with embedded questions. In this session, participants will use two free educational online tools to create engaging interactive videos in their classroom. The session will open with asking participants about their experience levels with technology (like in a classroom, we can use the thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or halfway measure). We will ask teachers what educational tools they have used and if they have used EdPuzzle or Nearpod. Then participants will have a short demo of how to use the educational tools. We will have a short presentation where we model how to get a video off of YouTube, how to add questions, how to share the video, and how to view results. Then we will go over the same process with Nearpod. We will also go over some research-based tips for choosing an effective video. After that, we will have our interactive section. Participants will get out their laptops and go to YouTube and find 1 video they would like to use in their class. Participants will follow the instructions to make an EdPuzzle or a Nearpod video, while our presenters walk around to assist. After everyone is done, we will do something of a Think-Pair-Share to test if the interactive nature of the video quizzes do help with learning retention. Participants will get into pairs and swap laptops. They will watch the interactive video another participant made. When they are done, they will return laptops and share with the video quiz’s creator what they learned. Finally, we will ask the audience members to raise their hands and share their experiences.
