Discover how a team of instructional designers, subject matter experts, and administrators collaborated to use voice cloning and generative AI technologies in a design-based approach to rapidly create content for an online course. Participants will take away sample prompts and experience a demonstration of voice cloning.
Topic Developing course content and instructional media is a highly complex and time-consuming endeavor. Even when the subject matter expert is an experienced online instructor and has taught the course in a face-to-face mode before, designing a quality online version of a course can sometimes take many months. In this case, the challenge presented to this team included (1) the factors of a brand new, “born online” course that needed to be written and built for online delivery, (2) a subject matter expert who knew the subject matter well but had not developed an online course before, and (3) a very short development timeline. The challenge of these combined factors inspired the team to wonder if the emerging technologies of generative AI and voice cloning technology could be used to accelerate the course production process. Through a series of steps including visioning, project planning, prototyping, prompting, cloning, and video editing, the team was able to meet the challenge and learned valuable lessons along the way. Plan for Interactivity - A team of presenters will describe their strategy and processes in approaching this challenge, share their lessons learned, and provide the audience with a live demonstration of voice cloning technology. Program administrators and project managers will offer their insights including concerns about the quality of the end product, intellectual property issues, and the validity of the approach as an acceptable method of course development. The instructional designer and subject matter expert will share their processes and the techniques they used during the creation of the content. Depending on the reliability of the Internet in the presentation area, this presentation will include a live demonstration of voice cloning using a volunteer from the audience. A question and answer portion will ensure that audience members' questions are addressed. The Takeaways - Participants will take away valuable insights and resources from this presentation including: 1. Seeing examples and strategies of how voice cloning and generative AI were used by an instructional designer and a subject matter expert to create course content 2. Hearing the perspectives of program leaders and project managers 3. Seeing a demonstration of voice cloning in action 4.
